RM of Spy Hill’s story
The Rural Municipality of Spy Hill No. 152 took shape in east-central Saskatchewan in the early 1900s. It was first set up as a local improvement district on January 3, 1910, and on December 11, 1911, it incorporated as a rural municipality. Its office is in the village of Spy Hill, and the municipality also takes in the villages of Gerald and Tantallon, along with Hazel Cliffe and Welby.
One reminder of the early farm settlement years is the Voysey Farmhouse Site, built in 1917 and the one heritage property within the RM. It stands as an example of the farms of that period.
Carlton Trail Regional Park, seven kilometres north of Spy Hill off Highway 8, began in the 1950s when John From, a local landowner and professional landscaper, built a summer park for local residents. He dug two artificial lakes, built a golf course and added a campground. In 1972 he sold the park to the Regional Park Authority. It lies along the Carlton Trail, a 19th-century route that linked Fort Garry with Fort Edmonton. Today it offers golfing, camping, fishing, a beach and hiking trails.
